Nothing “A Short History Of Decay” LP
The Philly-born band’s fifth album and first for Run For Cover Records, further explores the darker aspects of the human condition with an expanded embrace of dreamy shoegaze-inspired indie rock. Most of the sludgy heaviness has been cast aside, while the My Bloody Valentine influence has really taken a hold. Skittish electronic beats add a 65 Days Of Static vibe in places, and weirdly, I found myself thinking of Radiohead, too. I don’t necessarily enjoy thinking about Radiohead – depressing band – and I don’t particularly want to dwell too hard on MBV these days, either. But, here’s the thing, Nothing are the kind of sonic explorers that can take an influence and then elevate it to somewhere better, taking you by the hand, deeper into the strange, semi-darkness.
Bold statement, but I’ll stand by it: Nothing have consistently provided the most sonically interesting and concept-rich music within america’s alternative rock arena of the past couple of decades. And they’re still moving forward.
