Neurosis – “The Word As Law” LP
Originally released in the wilderness years of 1990 by Lookout! Records – The Word As Law was one of the few full-lengths during this barren period of time that flew the flag for DIY hardcore punk. A conduit for the spirit to continue. A landmark album. Arguably – and definitely, in my opinion – Neurosis‘ finest moment. Each song is completely memorable. Twisted, but tight. With mind-blowing jazzy basslines leading the way through an 8 song masterpiece that searches deep into the dark abyss of the human psyche.
With band reputation somewhat tarnished in more recent years, it’s ethically weird to celebrate the work of Neurosis… but in as much as they were barely out of their teens when this album was recorded, it doesn’t feel quite so sullied by the appaling behavoir of Scott Kelly in the intervening years. Tricky one, but the thing is, this an absolute classic album, and an extrodinary work of art, that (perhaps) does not deserve to be consigned to history’s dark carboard purely because of one fucked-up individual.
