Modest Mouse – “The Lonesome Crowded West” Double LP

Their second full-length album, released by Up Records in 1997. The trio formed in the suburbs of small-town Washington state by singer and guitarist Isaac Brock, with drummer Jeremiah Green, and bassist Eric Judy. Taking a template somewhere between Pixies, Sleater Kinney and Built To Spill, unstrapping all conventional restraints, and letting the songs go wherever the fuck they pleased… for the most past under the direction of Brock’s twisted, clever-funny, word-play. It’s hard to break-into a song who’s melody and rhythm is hung on a line like “She was going with a cinematographer, everyone knew that he was really a pornographer”, but if you dedicate the time and perserverance, there is a BIG pay off. One of the greatest albums of the ’90s. Never too late to catch-up, never the wrong time to reinvestigate.
