Their third album and first for bigger label, Reprise. A perfectly adequate follow up to 2004’s outrageously epic Leviathan, from two years before. Inevitably, more jaw-droppingly technical complexity (aka progginess) has seeped into the mix, and the emphasis is on clean, melodic vocals instead of the harsher style of old. But it still comes roaring at you, like a colossal elder god, risen-up, and enraged, awoken from eons of slumber deep beneath the mountains, and ready to fuck shit up. Guest appearances for Blood Mountain include Scott Kelly of Neurosis, Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, as well as keyboard player Isaiah “Ikey” Owens of The Mars Volta and singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala of At the Drive-In and The Mars Volta.
