Leslie Winer – “When I Hit You – You’ll Feel It” Double LP

A 16-track anthology that celebrates the extraordinary work of New York musician, fashion model, poet, and author, Leslie Winer. Cherry-picking from a catalogue that goes back to the late 1980s, and concentrating on the classic cult album of 1989, Witch – a masterpiece that combined politicised spoken-word/poetry with dub-beats and super-heavy bass lines (from Jah Wobble), that is now regarded as an essential forerunner to the trip hop genre of the early 1990s.
This collection also spotlights her diverse collaborations – composer Jon Hassell, Helen Terry (Culture Club), Kevin Mooney (Adam And The Ants) Mr Wobble (PIL etc.), and Karl Bonnie (Renegade Soundwave) –  and unearths previously-unreleased recordings. Read-up some more here, and here, at The Quietus.
Remastered, double vinyl, in a gatefold sleeve, with obi strip, and with cover art by Linder (Orgasm Addict” by the Buzzcocks etc.), including a 24 page booklet featuring an interview, liner notes, etc.
I recall some label rep chap handing me an anonimous promo copy of Witch when it finally got released in 1993 (at the time Winer went under the allias of just ‘C‘). I didn’t have a clue who the hell it was on this recording, but I was instantly mesmerised. And I’ve never fallen out of love with it since. More recently, I learned that John Peel was a big fan of Witch too – and he played it numerous times on his Radio 1 show – which makes total sense.
