Description
The Jesus And Mary Chain “Psychocandy” LP
The 1985 debut album, a sonic-pop maelstrom served-up by the Reid brothers from East Kilbride, along with their mates, Hart and Gillespie. Deliriously melodic Beach Boys tunes, wrung-through the Velvet Underground, Can, Stooges and, because of the insane levels of distortion and feedback, Flux Of Pink Indians, too – at least, that’s what I reckon. Crass svengali, John Loder, may have been a scientology nut job, but he was also a genius in the studio, and the perfect engineer to push the levels into full sonic destruction, fearless and acclimatised to noise levels that would have had other engineers ripping-off their lab-coats and running for the hills. What might otherwise might have been merely been another indie pop record placed among a host of other late-night Radio One, C86 bedsit boppers was instead upgraded into a full-blown classic pop-punk album, deserving of legendary status. Those Chain guys, they chose wisely.
Back in press for a fortieth anniversary via Thirdman Records who have given Psychocandy a well deserved high-end, remastered, dust-off.
