The groundbreaking debut album by the San Francisco anti-music punks, originally released on Subterranean Records in 1982. A maddening blast of rambling, rumbling, no wave self destruction. Guitar tuning, and timing? Pah, who needs ’em… The genius of Flipper lay as much in their conceptional ideas rather than the actual sound of their music. Is it a musical masterpiece? No! Is it an excruciating test of endurance? Often, yes! Should every home own a copy? Absolutely fucking yes! The influence cast by this unique/absurd album is huge – ripped off (in concept) by PIL, and, yeah, Kurt Cobain, blah blah blah… More significantly, an album that provided a name for Sunderland’s Generic!
Record labels must have been queuing-up to get their hands on this re-release, so, kudos to Superior Viaduct for scoring the deal and keeping the legacy alive with a faithful reproduction of the original (with added sleeve notes on the insert). Let’s hope 1984’s album, Gone Fishin’ is next in line…
