Excel – “The Joke’s On You” Double LP
The second album by Venice/Los Angeles crossover skate punks. Broader and bolder is it’s musical range compared to 1987’s Split Image, from two years earlier. With the backing of Caroline Records behind them, The Joke’s On You has a more polished sound, and it was produced by Randy Burns, known for working with Megadeth, Kreator, Possessed. It remains a great example of 80’s crossover. It’s all in the hair: while all the the musicians in Excel grew theirs long; the vocalist kept his cropped. And this, I think, is the key to their sound. This repress includes a bonus track, Blaze Some Hate, which was originally released as a 12″ single (there alongside C.O.C.’s Technocracy 12″). Remastered by Brad Boatright .
