Envy – “Eunoia” LP
The Japanese post-hardcore legends, 32 years into their career, return once again with another album. I make it their ninth full-length studio recording. A re-energised band after the line-up rearrangement of 2018, while still delivering the instantly recognisable signature sound that is classic Envy. I am always happy to embrace yet another Envy recording, and more so this time around – I’m loving the new, super melodic singing here, that contrasts with Tetsuya’s familiar diary-like vocal narratives. This is a superb progression from 2020’s The Fallen Crimson. A masterpiece of orchestral drama that hits new heights of euphoria, releasing nerve shredding crescendos that are done that special Envy way, and this time around it as majestic and mind-blowing as any of their releases that have come before. Satan bless my ten toes, I love ’em. Apparently ‘Eunoia’ is a word describing the mutual feeling of goodwill that exists between a speaker and their audience. I dig it.
