Effigy “Burnt Offerings” LP
Rescued from obscurity, a five track demo recording from 1983 by a band who rarely managed to escape the confines of their home town of Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. Classify this one under should have beens who didn’t quite make it but certainly deserved to. Recognition finally arrives over forty years later. Melodic post punk, slightly PIL influenced, with an overhang from the second wave of anarcho punk (I could imagine a track very comfortably placed within a mortarhate compilation). Reminds me of less obvious bands, such as early Blyth Power, or the less speedy moments of Darlington’s Dan. Lost Cheres and Hagar The Womb , too – mainly due to the distinct early 80’s (female) style of singing (I guess they were all emulating Siouxsie Sioux – and who can blame them).Hard to believe that there was not even a rough version of this recording lurking on youtube. It all heightens the treasure-like appeal and tantillising sense of discovery. Quite exciting, really. The lyric sheet comes with a new interview with the band members and “as much archive as we could dig out, which in this case wasn’t much”.
