Drug Church – “Tawny” LP
The latest recordings by the Albany, New York post hardcore troubadours, with a career that now stretches back ten whole years, with three albums – all of them excellent – and now a fourth EP to add to the list. Like all of Patrick Kindlon’s musical projects this is blessed with the magic touch of his incisive social observation. Surely, hands down, the best lyricist of his generation? And his singing voice, weirdly enough, has never sounded better. Aided by a band unafraid of taking-on big indie pop-tunes, and winning – those hooks are BIG. And as for the Arcwelder song (one of my favourite bands, ever) it’s an inspired choice of cover, even if Drug Church fail to add anything new to its sublime brilliance. But it provides an opportunity to post a youtube clip of the original version, (one of my favourite things on the internet, ever). The day when Touch & Go Records repress all the Arcwelder albums will be a day to be exceedingly happy. Until then, I gratefully make the most of Drug Church. Keeps me happy for the meantime.
