Defeater – “Abandoned” LP
The fourth album by Boston’s Defeater, recorded in 2014-2015. Abandoned is another concept album, which picks-up the story of the Catholic priest featured in their song “Cowardice” from 2008’s Travels. Kind of like Fucked Up, these guys push hardcore into new places, exploring narratives, utilsing additional multi-media/text, and telling the stories of an imagined family from the past, with their flaws, misadventures and personnal dramas. Closer in spirit to the geat American novel rather than the hardcore bands who’s musical style they share (Modern Life Is War, Touche Amore, Have Heart, Hope Conspiracy etc.). Musicaly, this also continues the themes of the previous Bridge 9 recordings, but occasional sung passages and melodic breaks are a welcome new addition to the screamy, hardcore barrage for which they are known.
