Cat Power – “What Would the Community Think” LP

The third album for Chan Marshall’s Cat Power. Recorded in Memphis, Tennessee, by Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley (who also provides the drumming), and released in 1996 by Matador Records. A high drama mix of folk, blues and post rock (I think Spiderland cast it’s mesmeric influence, once again). This was the first Cat Power album to grab my attention, and it has remained the one that I am most likely to return to, 25 years later. Minimal bare-bones instrumentation that is full of nervous tension and atmosphere; and Chan’s melancholic lyrics and voice, full of honesty – of traumas barely survived, and the resulting guilt, sadness and defiance. An understated, epic album.
