With the releases of 2016’s Star Spawn these guys instantly became the big buzz band in the metal underground, and this follow-up absolutely cements that reputation. Featuring classic 1970s artwork by Sci-Fi legend Bruce Pennington, it’s immediately apparent this is not your straight-up, garden-variety death metal. I’m reluctant to use the ‘progressive’ tag – it has problematic connotations, after all – so, lets just say Hidden History of the Human Race greatly expands typical metal way beyond the norm – profound concepts and subjects have been contemplated and explored, sci-fi fiction has been consumed, probably psychedelic drugs, too. And musically, no doubt, this band practise their musical chops one helluva lot. A darker, spacier version of early Mastadon with the tech insanity of Gorguts, and the growly grind attack of Assuck. This is a modern-day metal masterpiece.
