Blind Girls -“An Exit Exists” LP
Technical screamo from the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The third album for this quintet – new to me – a crushing, tempestuous take on modern crossover hardcore, with the crossover being primarily into screamo (’cause the vocals are mostly screamed, after all), and also the forays into other styles: mathy time signatures, with sections that are tense post rock, and moments, while not overtly metal, are very close to the intensity and dynamics of Jane Doe era Converge. Incorporating moody melodies with face-ripping breakdowns, thrashing blast beats, and technically proficient time changes – providing a platform to address and confront themes around forms of abuse. Not always an easy listen – great art should challenge us, at least sometimes – and the pay-offs here are huge. I would definitely seek out Blind Girl’s older releases.
