Bleakness – “Functionally Extinct” LP
Bleakness are based in Lyon and this is their debut album following-on from a 7″ EP that came out in 2018. Described by themselves as being “a perfect combination of the sadness of early 80’s post-punk and the anger of nowadays french hardcore punk”. The blackened theme and melodic guitars share something with Canada’s Crusades; the post punk influence aligns them comfortably between Litovsk and Chain Cult. The overriding feel is one of gritty, upbeat punk, played with energetic passion and balanced by a tone of dark moodiness. And like the best melancholia, it comes with triumphant melodies. Hopefully touring the UK later in 2020.
