Black Country, New Road – “For The First Time” LP
The debut 12″ by the experimental post-punk seven-piece band from Cambridge (formerly known as Nervous Conditions), incorporating a tense Slint/90’s post rock influence into their twitchy blend of jazzy improv and high voltage indie rock. It’s sure is tricky being an indie sensation in the UK – one minute you’re playing to the Rough Trade staff at the Windmill; slipping from 6music night-time to 6music daytime; A Guardian write-up away from the Jools Holland shit-show… and then… hellooo landfill. Hopefully BCNW have the youthfull idealism and outsider contrarianism to help keep them righteous and untainted. The Spiderland reference definitely helps, as too does the awkward, slightly mad, agit-pop energy (does anyone remember Bristol’s Soeza? Geat band, and there are similarities to BCNW). Pop fact: bassist Tyler Hyde (who is, has to be said, a very good bassplayer), is the daughter of a member of Underworld.
