Birdlegs “Visions Beyond The Ape Cave” LP
A rush of hyper-urgent, old school hardcore punk from ex members of The Nerve Agents, Redemption 87, A.F.I., Overexposure and Pressure Cracks. Considering three members were involved with Redemption 87 it comes as no surprise that Birdlegs do sound like a continuation of where that band left-off in the late 1990s, not least ’cause of Eric Ozenne’s distinct vocal howl (vocals that always remind me of Ray Cappo and Djinji Brown of ABsolution). Apparently there is a A.F.I. element in the mix as well, but A.F.I. are a band I never managed to crack. Before Redemption 87 drummer Gary Gutfeld played in Hi-Fives and Corduroy. Now, Corduroy were an early 90’s San Francisco Superchunk-style indie rock band that I had forgotten all about. I am now listening to Corduroy, when perhaps I should be listening to Birdlegs – who are, afterall, a cool new band well worth checking out… although, I am having trouble getting past the trickisome name.
