Beast Of Beast “Sex, Drugs…And Noise” LP
The early-years hardcore punk band from Hollywood, California with a reissue of their one and only 12″ EP. Originally released in 1983 on My Ass Records, it was almost immediately repressed by Mutha Records (apparently the singer is also the sister of the NJHC band Chronic Sick). An essential release for purveyors of first/second generation American punk – Beast Of Beast bashed out some great hardcore aggression, and they also occasionally slowed down to a post-punk pace – which lead to them being classified as proto death-rock (not as overtly so, as, say, Christian Death, but nonetheless, you can hear it in at least one song on the EP). The stand out factor is Virginia Macolino’s vocals – strong and versatile – and helped-out by a very capable band that included a member of Angry Samoans on drums. The overall gist of it is TSOL meets Legal Weapon and 45 Grave, but with a little additional wildness thrown-in, not at all dissimilar to the timing and energy of early Die Kreuzen. Bit of a lost gem, is this. Cause I’d never heard of ’em before. Quite the revelation.
This reissue includes ten bonus tracks recorded between 1981-1984 cherry-picked from over ten hours of rehearsals and demo recordings. Features tons of photos by Edward Colver, Alison Braun, and others, with a band bio, and includes an 11″ x 17″ poster.
